What the website says:

“The latest groundbreaking innovation from boscia is all strip, no tease. This jet black, mineral-rich peel-off mask delivers powerful detoxifying, purifying, and brightening results as it exfoliates skin and refines pores. Dead skin, impurities and excess oil are stripped away along with the dried mask for immediate and visible results.

The Luminizing Black Mask's exceptional treatment benefits include:

• Dramatic improvement in skin's clarity and radiance. Skin is brighter and smoother.

• Impurities, bacteria and excess oil are drawn out.

• Powerful antioxidants to prevent free-radical damage, such as lines, wrinkles, dryness and dullness.

• Reduced skin roughness and minimized lines and wrinkles, resulting in younger-looking skin.

Calcium Montmorillonite Clay, a premier quality clay containing 67 minerals, absorbs excess oil, dirt and toxins from the skin, exfoliates dead skin cells, and leaves the skin purified, nourished, restored and immaculately clean. Maritime Pine Bark Extract provides exceptionally powerful antioxidant and soothing benefits, as well as long-lasting conditioning. Witch Hazel, an anti-inflammatory and natural antiseptic extract, kills blemish-causing bacteria, helps restore skin suppleness, tightens pores, prevents whiteheads and blackheads, and provides a firming effect. And Rosemary Leaf Extract, an extremely effective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, helps firm and reduce the appearance of large pores.

Suitable for all skin types.”

What I Think:

I got this as a sample at Sephora, and I was looking forward to trying it out after checking out so many positive reviews online.

Boscia is a popular Japanese brand of skin care who are known being preservative free and not using a bunch of harsh chemicals and toxic ingredients in their products (unlike a lot of other brands). Sephora has a great explaination of the company and it’s practices on their web site.

First of all, this mask is seriously fun to put on. It is a shiny pitch black shade, with a very thick gooey/sticky/tar-like consistency. You are supposed to spread it around your skin in an even layer so you don’t see the skin underneath, and that way you ensure that the mask is on thick enough to make the removal part easier. You definitely avoid putting it anywhere near the eye area, as this mask really sticks to your skin like liquid latex.

You wait around 15 or so minutes for it to dry (which you can definitely feel it doing on your face while it’s on) then peel it off to reveal nicer skin. The mask looks funny when you remove it, and because of its colour you can see where it pulled off and out dry skin and impurities from your face.

Upon removal I would say that it does a great job of taking off dry skin, but only a ‘meh’ job of cleaning out pores. Some people liken this product to a giant Biore strip for the face, but I disagree.

I ended up giving the rest of the sample for my sister to try (while I used a real Biore strip :P) and she had the same opinion as me on it.

Would I purchase this?

No, the price is too steep and since I was looking for something that did more of the pore-cleaning, I would prefer to go with another product. There are also reviews about how there isn’t that much product in the tube and it doesn’t last very long since you have to apply it thickly. But I will admit that it has a great novelty factor, as wandering around with black blobs on one’s face gets some pretty funny stares. ^_^

If you are interested in purchasing this product, I will let you know that it is very popular, and tends to sell out at Sephora very quickly. I just checked the actual boscia website, and it is backordered even on there! Just an fyi.

All in all, it was fun, but unless it is another sample, I won’t use this product again.

I've seen a couple of reviews about this product and they were kind of 'eh' about it too. I really like the Biore face strips! I always hate removing entire face masks that require peeling though.
